Turn Messy Notes Into a Clear Action Plan With ChatGPT
Use ChatGPT to organize scattered ideas into a prioritized plan you can actually execute.
Step 1: Dump Everything Into ChatGPT
Start by giving ChatGPT all of your messy notes exactly as they are. Don’t waste time organizing them first. Include unfinished ideas, tasks, concerns, goals, reminders, and anything else taking up space in your head. The goal of this step is to get everything into one place so ChatGPT can separate actual tasks from ideas, decisions, and things that are not important right now.
Prompt
I’m going to give you a messy brain dump of everything currently on my mind.
Do not create a plan yet.
First, organize everything I give you into these categories:
1. Tasks I actually need to complete
2. Decisions I need to make
3. Ideas worth saving
4. Problems or blockers
5. Things that are probably unnecessary or low priority
6. Information/context that is not itself an action
Do not remove anything important.
If two items are duplicates or clearly related, group them together.
Keep the wording simple and make the output easy to scan.
Here is my brain dump:
[PASTE YOUR NOTES HERE]Step 2: Find What Actually Matters
Stay in the same ChatGPT conversation so it keeps the organized list from Step 1. Now have it separate high-impact work from things that merely feel urgent. This prevents you from ending up with a giant to-do list where every task looks equally important. You want to know which few actions actually move your main goal forward.
Prompt
Using the organized list you just created, prioritize everything based on impact.
First identify what you believe my main goals are from the context I gave you.
Then classify each real task as:
HIGH PRIORITY
Directly moves an important goal forward or removes a major blocker.
MEDIUM PRIORITY
Useful and should eventually be completed, but does not need my immediate attention.
LOW PRIORITY
Low impact, optional, premature, or something I should probably ignore for now.
Then give me:
1. The 3 most important things I should focus on
2. Why each one matters
3. What I should deliberately NOT focus on right now
4. Any task I should delete, delegate, automate, or postpone
Do not prioritize something simply because it sounds urgent.
Prioritize based on actual impact.Step 3: Turn It Into an Execution Plan
Now convert the priorities into something you can actually follow. Keep using the same conversation so ChatGPT understands the reasoning from the first two steps. The finished plan should tell you exactly what to work on first, what “done” looks like, and what comes next instead of giving you another vague list of goals.
Prompt
Using everything from our conversation, turn my highest-priority work into a concrete execution plan.
For each priority, give me:
1. The desired outcome
2. The exact tasks required to reach it
3. The correct order to complete those tasks
4. The first action I should take
5. Any dependencies or blockers
6. What “done” looks like
Break large tasks into smaller actions when necessary.
Then create a simple plan for the next 7 days.
For each day, tell me:
- what to work on;
- the most important outcome for that day;
- what can wait until later.
Do not overload each day with unnecessary tasks.
Optimize the plan around making meaningful progress on the few things that matter most.Step 4: Decide What to Do Right Now
A good plan is useless if you still spend ten minutes deciding where to start. Finish by having ChatGPT reduce everything down to one immediate action. Come back to this prompt whenever you finish a major task or start feeling overwhelmed again.
Prompt
Based on the plan we just created, tell me the single most valuable thing I should work on right now.
Give me:
1. The exact task
2. Why it should come first
3. The first 3 actions I should take
4. What I should have completed before moving to anything else
Keep the answer concise.
Do not give me multiple options.
Choose the best next action for me based on everything you know from this conversation.
